Welcome to Nepal! It's an incredible country, but like any travel destination, being mindful of your food and water choices is key to staying healthy and enjoying your trip to the fullest. A common travel mishap is falling ill from contaminated food or water, which can easily derail your adventure.

Regarding water, always opt for bottled water from reputable sources, ensuring the seal is intact. Alternatively, use a personal water filter bottle, purification tablets, or drink only boiled water. Avoid tap water, even for brushing your teeth, and be cautious with ice in drinks unless you're certain it's made from purified water.

When it comes to food, a good rule of thumb is to eat food that is well-cooked and served hot. Be wary of raw salads and unpeeled fruits from street vendors, as they might have been washed in unsafe water. Fruits you can peel yourself, like bananas or oranges, are generally a safer bet.

Street food can be a delicious part of the cultural experience, but choose wisely. Look for stalls that are busy with locals, as this often indicates freshness and good turnover. Watch how the food is prepared and ensure it's cooked thoroughly right in front of you.

Beyond what you consume, personal hygiene plays a significant role. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if washing facilities aren't available. Try to avoid touching your face after handling money or high-traffic surfaces.

Despite all precautions, sometimes travelers still experience an upset stomach. Carry rehydration salts (ORS) with you to prevent dehydration. If symptoms persist or worsen, such as high fever or severe diarrhea, don't hesitate to seek local medical advice immediately.
